Roomba Error 17 — Navigation problem — robot got lost
DIRECT ANSWER
COMMON CAUSES · RANKED
Environment changed mid-clean MOST COMMON
A door that closed behind it or rearranged furniture erases the landmarks it was navigating by.
Room too dark for the camera
The localization camera needs at least dim light. A pitch-dark room blinds it.
Heavy floor clutter
Cords, laundry and scattered objects break up the paths the robot planned.
Infrared interference RARE
IR-heavy devices such as VR base stations can drown out the robot's own signals.
HOW TO FIX IT
Restore the layout
Reopen doors, put moved furniture back, and pick up floor clutter before restarting.
Turn on some light
Dim light is enough. If jobs run at night, leave a lamp on or schedule for daylight.
Start from the dock
Robots localize best from their dock. If the error repeats, move the dock to a more open spot and start there.
Fence off the trap zones
Thresholds it can enter but not exit deserve a Virtual Wall or keep-out zone.
