ROOMBA·FAULT SYM CRITICAL

Roomba won't turn on

Severity: Critical — robot is completely down until power is restored 600eijs
Last verified: 2026-07-05 Tools: Phillips screwdriver (battery door) Time: ~20 min Difficulty: moderate

DIRECT ANSWER

A Roomba that won't respond is almost always out of charge, not broken. Dock it on a powered base for two hours, then press CLEAN. No lights after that points to the battery or its contacts.

COMMON CAUSES · RANKED

1

Battery fully drained MOST COMMON

Left off the dock for weeks, the pack drops so low that no lights come on at first. It needs time on a working dock before it shows any sign of life.

2

No charge reaching the robot

Dead outlet, switched-off strip, or dirty contacts — the robot was parked on the dock but never actually charging.

3

Battery loose or pull tab still in

After transport or a battery swap, the pack may sit a millimeter proud. Some new units ship with a yellow pull tab that blocks the circuit until removed.

4

Battery at end of life UNCOMMON

Years of cycles leave a pack that charges to full and collapses the moment it leaves the dock.

5

Main board failure RARE

Charges normally, never wakes. Rare, and usually a service or replacement decision rather than a home fix.

HOW TO FIX IT

SAFETY · READ THIS FIRST

Unplug the dock before cleaning its contacts, and only open the battery door with the robot off the dock. Never pry at a swollen battery.

Charge for two hours, then press CLEAN

Use an outlet you have verified with another device. A deeply drained pack shows nothing for the first stretch — leave it alone.

Clean the charging contacts

With the dock unplugged, wipe the strips on dock and robot with lightly dampened melamine foam.

Reboot the robot

Hold CLEAN until the light ring swirls or you hear a tone — about 20 seconds on e, i and s models; on a 600, hold HOME and SPOT for 10 seconds.

Reseat the battery

Flip the robot, undo the battery door screws, pull the pack, check for a yellow tab, and press it back in until flush.

Dead or dying after all that? New battery

A robot that only runs minutes after a full charge, or stays dark after a reseat, needs the replacement pack for its series.
