Roborock won't return to the dock

Severity: Warning — If the App shows charging after you set the robot on the dock by hand, you can keep using it that way while you track down the failing stage. S7S8

DIRECT ANSWER

A Roborock that won't get home stalled at one of three stages: finding the dock, seating on it, or charging there. Identify which before you move the dock or touch the map.

What to check, in order

1

The robot lost its reference

Roborock links failed returns to a clean started somewhere other than the dock and to a robot moved by hand. Either way, the robot may still be relocating when it heads home.

2

Obstacles or a cramped spot

Furniture, cables or a tight corner can block the route or the last stretch in front of the dock. Clearance figures change from dock to dock, so measure against your own manual.

3

Dirty or blocked signal surfaces

The robot finds home through the dock's front signal area and its own front sensor. Dust on either can get in the way. The manuals also name two specific cases: protective film left on a new Auto-Empty Dock's beacon, and direct sunlight on an S8 Pro Ultra station.

4

A poor final approach

When the robot arrives but won't seat, look at the floor and the dock itself. The manuals point to soft or uneven flooring, a station base that isn't fully assembled, a cluttered approach and dirty charging contacts.

5

No power, or a station error

A dark dock may have no power, but on several docks the light also goes off while charging, and on the S8 Pro Ultra station while drying. On the self-emptying and washing stations, red marks a station fault that the App or voice prompt should identify.

HOW TO FIX IT

No battery or electrical work involved in this fix.

Watch one full return

Start a clean from the dock and follow the robot when it heads back. Note where it stops. Also note whether the previous run started elsewhere or whether someone carried the robot, since Roborock names both as triggers.

Check power and clear the way

Make sure the dock is plugged in, then read its light against your own dock's manual. On the plain S7 dock the light stays on with power while the robot is away, but several stations go dark while charging or drying. For a robot that can't find the dock, the S7 manual starts with obstacles and distance. For one that won't charge, it starts with the power cord and contacts.

Give the dock the space its manual asks for

Put the dock on level floor against a wall. The S7's CDZ11RR/CDZ12RR dock needs 0.5 m on each side and 1.5 m in front. Washing stations, the S8 Pro Ultra and the Qrevo Series use other figures, listed in the field notes. Measure with a tape instead of judging by eye.

Wipe the signal surfaces

With the robot switched off and the dock unplugged, run a dry cloth over the dock's front signal area and the robot's front sensor. Roborock names these two surfaces for finding the dock. Move anything standing in front of the dock, then plug it back in.

Test from near the dock

Put the robot down a short way off with the dock in plain view and send it home. If it still misses the dock or won't seat, place it on by hand, which the S7 MaxV manual allows, and see whether charging starts.

Confirm it is actually charging

Sitting on the dock is not the same as charging. Check the charging status in the App and watch whether the battery level climbs. If it doesn't, switch the robot off, unplug the dock and wipe the contacts on both with a soft, dry cloth, then reconnect and test again. Do Not Disturb lowers the robot's voice prompts and dims its power indicator, so go by the App.

IF IT STILL FAILS

IF
The map in the App is shown at the wrong angle
→ For this case, Roborock suggests re-siting the dock or switching Map Saving off and on so the next run builds a fresh map. A fresh map may mean redrawing zones and no-go areas, so check what your App keeps first. If the map looks normal but the robot still heads the wrong way, go back to dock placement and start the next clean from the dock. Source: Roborock Support: What should I do when the map is at a wrong angle?
IF
On an Auto-Empty Dock, the robot circles without seating
→ Look at the dock's power indicator, then check whether protective film is still covering the location beacon. Roborock gives these two checks for the Auto-Empty Dock only. Source: Roborock Support: Robot fails to dock properly on the Auto-Empty Dock after cleaning
IF
The Empty Wash Fill Dock's light turns red
→ On the EWFD01LRR/EWFD02LRR, red means a station error. Read the App or voice prompt to find which one, and deal with that error before working on the robot's docking. Source: Roborock Empty Wash Fill Dock EWFD01LRR/EWFD02LRR manual (FCC)
IF
It seats squarely but the App never shows charging
→ Navigation and docking worked, so the next checks are on the charging side. Check the cord and outlet, and with the dock unplugged wipe the contacts dry once more. If charging still doesn't start, continue with the not-charging guide. Source: Roborock S7 user manual (English): charging dock and common issues

WHEN TO STOP

STOP HERE

Everything on this page is an external check. Don't open the robot or the dock. Contact Roborock support if the problem continues after you have placed the dock to its manual, cleaned the surfaces and cleared the route. Give them the robot and dock models, any App or voice error, and what happened in both the hand-placed test and the automatic return.

Roborock S7
The S7 manual pairs this robot with the CDZ11RR/CDZ12RR dock. If the robot can't find the dock, check obstacles and distance first. If it sits on the dock without charging, check the power cord, then wipe the contacts with a dry cloth. · Source

Roborock S7 MaxV
This manual also covers the CDZ11RR/CDZ12RR dock and lets you put the robot on the dock by hand when it can't find it. Carrying the robot or using Spot cleaning can make it relocate or start a new map. That is not the same as having to delete a saved map. Do Not Disturb lowers the robot's voice prompts and dims its power indicator; the manual does not say this about the dock light. · Source

Roborock S8 Pro Ultra
The station needs 0.7 m clear in front and 0.5 m above, on hard, level floor, out of direct sunlight and with nothing blocking the beacon. The manual gives no side figure, so don't borrow the older 0.5 m one. The station light pulses while emptying or washing and turns red for a station error. It is off when the station is powered off, charging or drying, so a dark light alone tells you little. Do Not Disturb applies to the robot's power indicator. · Source

FIELD NOTES

WHAT THE OFFICIAL DOCS LEAVE OUT — AND WHAT OWNERS REPORT

Getting home is three separate jobs. Navigation brings the robot to the dock, final docking puts it on the contacts, and charging starts after that. If the App shows charging when you set the robot on by hand, the charging path worked at that moment, so the next thing to look at is navigation and the approach. That single result doesn't clear the dock, the contacts or the battery for good. An intermittent supply or contact fault can come back.

Clearance depends on the dock. The S7 and S7 MaxV manuals ask for 0.5 m on each side and 1.5 m in front of the CDZ11RR/CDZ12RR charging dock. The Auto-Empty Dock (AED01HRR/AED02HRR) and the Empty Wash Fill Dock (EWFD01LRR/EWFD02LRR) use the same side and front figures and add 1 m above. The S8 Pro Ultra manual gives 0.7 m in front and 0.5 m above. The Qrevo Series manual describes one overall space 0.4 m wide, 0.9 m high and 1.2 m deep. That manual covers the Qrevo Series only, not the older Q5 and Q7.

Lights vary just as much. The plain dock stays lit with power and goes dark during charging, while the robot's power indicator breathes. The Auto-Empty Dock is solid white on standby, flashes white while emptying and turns solid red for a fault. It also goes dark with no power, or once a fault has lasted more than 10 minutes. The Empty Wash Fill Dock breathes while emptying or washing and turns red for a station error. The S8 Pro Ultra station is dark when powered off, charging or drying. The Qrevo Series station may dim or turn off under Do Not Disturb. So check the App before you read a dark light as a broken dock.

The model notes cover the S7, S7 MaxV and S8 Pro Ultra because their manuals document these dock checks. Other Roborock robots can follow the general steps, but take spacing and light meanings from your own dock's manual. Moving a dock doesn't by itself mean you have to delete the map.

FAQ · REAL QUESTIONS

Why won't my Roborock return to the dock?

Roborock names a clean started away from the dock, obstacles and a robot moved by hand. Watch one return to see where it stops. Not finding the dock, not seating and not charging each lead to a different check.

Can I move my Roborock dock without remapping?

Try that first. Roborock doesn't say every move needs a new map. Give the dock its manual's spacing, start a clean from it and watch the return. Switching Map Saving off and on is Roborock's advice for a map shown at the wrong angle.

How do I manually return a Roborock to its dock?

Set it on the dock by hand, square on the contacts. The S7 MaxV manual allows this when the robot can't find the dock. Check that the App shows charging, then start the next clean from the dock.

Where should I put the Roborock dock?

On level floor, against a wall. The S7's CDZ11RR/CDZ12RR dock needs 0.5 m on each side and 1.5 m in front. Washing stations, the S8 Pro Ultra and the Qrevo Series list different space, so follow your own dock's manual.

What does a red light on the Roborock dock mean?

It depends on the dock. On the Empty Wash Fill Dock, red means a station error, and the App or voice prompt should say which one. A dark light can mean charging or no power. Check your own dock's manual for its light meanings.
